ステートメント

My practice begins where the body stops being only a subject and becomes a medium. For over two decades I have photographed the nude through light, optics, time, and physical materials. In my photographs the body is always in the process of becoming something else.

Again and again, my work returns to the moment a body begins to dissolve into what surrounds it. In ニッチ, a figure left alone in a room merges with its walls, its light, and its emptiness. In エコトーン, the body returns to nature until the line between skin and landscape fades. In モートス, movement and time take on the qualities of space, and the body disappears into the trace of its own gesture. In ルシダ, fluorescent pigment under ultraviolet light turns the body into the source of its own light. In 検死, it hovers between life and death, still present and already leaving.

The body is also where inner states become visible. メランコリア reads the weight of melancholy in a bowed head and in a body leaning on whatever is near. 渇望 turns to appetite and pleasure: heat, touch, taste, and a gaze that looks back. 他の場所 asks what it means for an unclothed body simply to exist in a street shared with others. In キメラ, bent mirrors multiply and reshape the figure; in its sub-series ディズモルフィア, models face their own distorted reflections, the way social pressure can distort how people see their own bodies. アンヌード strips everything back to black and white, hard light, and scale, until skin reads as line and a fold reads as volume.

私は主にカメラ内処理で作業します。 キメラ come from bending a physical mirror, the blur in モートス from long exposure, the glow in ルシダ from pigment responding to ultraviolet light. No image is generated or extended with AI; Photoshop and Lightroom are used only for tonal control, cleanup, colour correction and print preparation. These choices are about presence more than purity. The image has to happen in the room, the street, or the field, with the person in front of the lens, while the shutter is open.

The people I photograph are participants, never raw material. Several of my series are made with dancers and performers. In 急いで, a sub-series of モートス, ballerinas danced without warning on the streets of Istanbul, and I photographed the trace of that moment along with the people who stopped, or did not stop, to watch. In Stills, dancers answered photographs of everyday objects with their own bodies. Consent is the condition of every photograph. Curating イスタンブールのヌード extended this position beyond my own work: alongside fourteen photographers, three models wrote for the book as authors, because the person photographed should have a voice in how the body is seen.

I let the figure set the terms of its own visibility. Sometimes the face turns away or dissolves into silhouette; sometimes, as in 渇望, the image looks straight back. In both cases the body belongs to the person inside the frame. The work comes from attention, not provocation: a sustained looking that treats the body as the place where seeing begins, and leaves the person photographed intact.

バイオグラフィー

Burak Bulut Yıldırım (b. 1982, Istanbul) is a Berlin-based photographer, artist, curator, and educator working internationally. He began in Istanbul as an arts journalist before photography became his primary language, and opened his first studio there in 2005. His fine-art practice investigates the body as a medium through light, in-camera optical intervention, material transformation, and spatial encounter, moving between intimate portraiture, performative photography, and the nude.

His ongoing series include キメラ, アンヌード, ルシダ, エコトーン, メランコリア, 検死, モートス, 他の場所, 渇望そして ニッチ, together with the モートス sub-series 急いで そして Stills. Across them, the body appears as landscape, architecture, and emotional threshold, shaped by mirrors, long exposure, ultraviolet light, and pigment during the shoot itself.

His photographs have been shown in solo and group exhibitions across Europe, including アンヌード身体の建築 Die Akt Galerie(ベルリン)にて(2025年);; ポートレート, フォーゲ・ギャラリー、チューリッヒ(2025年);; ドレスコード軽装, Die Akt Galerie、ベルリン(2024年);; エロスとタナトス, XValギャラリー、バルセロナ(2023年);; 動く身体, Loosen Art Gallery、ローマ(2019年);; ブラックライト そして 急いで at Volksbank Gallery and Abraham-Gumbel-Saal, Heilbronn (2019); and 急いで at Pinelo Art Gallery, Istanbul (2014). In 2025 he presented his work at The Other Art Fair, London. In 2026, work from ルシダ was included in URBAN Exhibits: Photo Days Tour, part of Trieste Photo Days, at Mercato Coperto, Trieste.

Alongside his own practice, Yıldırım works as a curator. His curatorial project イスタンブールのヌード, bringing together fourteen photographers and three model-authors from Istanbul, opened at Die Akt Galerie, Berlin (3–19 July 2026) and continues at Uxval Gochez Gallery, Barcelona (20 November – 4 December 2026). It is accompanied by an English-language hardcover photobook published by Mijuk Papers, Berlin (ISBN 978-3-00-087439-0), held by the National Art Library at the V&A, London. A short documentary on the project, 『イスタンブールのヌード:身体と空間』, directed by Meryem Aydın, was selected for LOOP City Screen at LOOP Barcelona 2026. His earlier curatorial project ランズヌード was presented at Artcore Gallery, Thessaloniki, in 2015.

As an educator, he has mentored more than 5,000 photography students.

His work has been reviewed by curator Michael Hanna for Aedra Fine Arts and featured in international photography publications. He received Honorable Mentions at the International Photography Awards in 2012 and 2017. ディズモルフィア, a sub-series of キメラ, received an Honorable Mention at the 2024 Annual Photography Awards in the Body & Nudes category. Selected works are held in private collections and are available as limited edition archival prints.

He has been a Sony Europe Imaging Ambassador since 2018. He is a member of the Bund Professioneller Portraitfotografen (BPP) and the Royal Photographic Society, and holds the International Artist Card of the IGBK (Internationale Gesellschaft der Bildenden Künste).
